Thoughts on: Star Trek Into Darkness


A popcorn movie through and through. When you’re released at the same time as another movie in the same genre, you’re bound to be compared, and this movie definitely loses to Ironman 3. Nothing is particularly wrong with it – it’s just nothing special. The script made sure to spell out even the most simple plot points to the audience multiple times, the music was overly dramatic, and some pretty damn corny lines were scattered throughout. It became painfully obvious that the plot was just there to have excuses for different action sequences. While solid, the action never wowed me like it did in Ironman 3 (except for the short warp-speed battle). Ironman 3 managed to be a far deeper and richer movie, while simultaneously winning on humour and action. If I was to sum up Star Trek 2 in a word, it would be “melodramatic”. Great to waste a few hours and have a bit of easy fun, but honestly I’d rather just re-watch Ironman 3.

Bonus Rant:

The pre-title opening scene was embarrassing. Ridiculous dialogue and cliché to the extreme, with Spock’s girlfriend’s terrible acting put on full display. I actually considered walking out before I hurt my eyes from rolling them too much. I plan on pretending the movie started at the title.

Variant Rule for D&D 5e: Inspiration

The 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons is, for many people, the best edition of D&D to date. Similar to previous editions, the various systems that make up the rules are separate enough that creating house rules is fairly painless, with the possibility for unforeseen ramifications kept to a minimum. The Dungeon Master's Guide is, in many ways, an enormous collection of house rules, ready to be used or ignored to meet the needs of each play group. These house rules go by the name of "Variant Rules" in the DMG. While a great system, 5e is not without its shortcomings. Adventures in Sweden

Source: Google As my plane descended into Swedish territory, I couldn't have asked for better timing. Dawn had barely arrived, fog surrounding the thousands of islands littering the "coastline". It was difficult to tell where the sea stopped and rivers began, but one thing was for certain – the Swedes don’t lack trees. Dense forest stretched as far as I could see – which is quite a substantial distance when you're several kilometers off the ground.
